i'm ultra optimistic about russ in pittsburgh -- he'd have been a great deal and massive upgrade at 35M per season. he's a steal at the vet min with no strings attached in 2025.
i don't get the bad rep that russ gets -- it seems he doesn't have good friends in the press or among teammates. he was essentially a top 5 qb last season and played arguably better than josh allen or patrick mahomes during the reg season. if people think russ was the problem in denver, they have to look elsewhere.
hopefully the steelers get a late round pick for kenny and move on. he cannot read defenses.

For sure the problems at Denver go way deeper than Russell Wilson, but having watched the majority of those games last year the idea that some stats suggest he was playing at a top 5 level is, basically, hard to justify.
As a fan, watching a Russell Wilson led offense in Denver has been brief moments of excitement and long periods of eyebleed. From the fan's perspective it soon becomes irrelevant if that is cheap or expensive, and just becomes an exercise in trying not to laugh/cry/watch a good team instead/etc.
No axe to grind with Wilson. Just passing on the results of my 'eye test' and glad I won't have to watch him unable to see the wide open receiver in the middle of the field and eat yet another sack again.
edit: yes, he played better in Y2 in some respects, but what you are seeing there is the Sean Peyton effect

Problem with Russ is he just cannot throw over the middle of the field. Less than 6% of his passes are over the middle of the field, which is like half as much as the next lowest QB. And in Arthur Smith's offense he likes his QBs to attack the middle of the field. He's got to try to play to Russell's strengths which is getting him outside the pocket where he can see, throwing deep, and heavy reliance on play action. Problem with that is while Russ is best outside the pocket, he just doesn't have the athleticism to thrive out there like he used to. Why he's getting sacked so much is he holds onto the ball too long and he can't escape pressure like he used to. All that said, on a minimum deal, should still be a upgrade over Rudolph and Pickett.

Panthers receive WR Diontae Johnson and a 7th-round pick.
Steelers receive DB Donte Jackson and a sixth-round pick.

we'll see what happens with russ, but i think his lack of athleticism has been overblown by the media. his sack rate has always hovered around 8-9% of dropbacks and that hasn't been a problem -- it's that high (like ben's was at some point) because of the scrambling. josh allen's pressure rate (including hurries) is also pretty high because of the scrambling drill. anyway, i found this video pretty fun -- and they are not bumping into russ after the sacks lol. his OL sucked (i'm not claiming he'll get much better pass pro with the steelers though hehe)
the narrative that has been propagated that he cannot use the middle of the field is even more mind boggling -- unless people are using the numbers under hackett, which is essentially the equivalent of matt canada being promoted to a head coach. between 2018-2020, russ attempted more passes over the middle than josh allen, prescott, drew brees (!) and had 1 less attempt than aaron rodgers. his passer rating was 115.4, 19 tDs and 5 ints. my take is that he was dealt a bad hand with hackett, and sean payton (who's a brilliant offensive mind) wasn't that good last year either.
i'll take my colored steelers glasses off when the season begins and will definitely complain here when russ takes sacks and doesn't use the middle of the field though :-)
