I've always wanted to do this, but never took the time. Well, here it goes...
1.9 Jackson Poston - RG (19% Dev) (30% Dev) (31% Dev)
Pre TC: 30/79
Post TC: 33/78 - Poston looks like a legit starter. He should be Faulk's replacement, but I may consider a move to C too.
Post EX2: 36/73 (+3/-5) - Poston dropped 5 future points and that is not a great sign. While he looks the part of a legit starter there were other options that I should have explored over him considering how deep the draft was at OL.
My Rationale: Historically, I am a BPA drafter, but I did come into this draft with the idea that I wanted to replenish my OL as I had a gang of vets that are getting older and expensive. Poston was a guy that jumped out to me as his bars were huge and his interview came back favorable. To me he was as close of a sure thing in this draft and the best OG hands down.
Other players, I considered with this pick: None, this guy was at the top of my list at this point in the draft.
1.11 Emmett Phillips - S (55% Dev) (66% Dev) (68% Dev)
Pre TC: 45/55 as S - 45/67 (after switching to CB)
Post TC: 52/67 - This kid will start from day one. How he fell out of the top 10 is beyond me.
Post EX2: (+8/0) - Phillips held strong and is going to start from day one. Should be a longterm starter for us moving forward.
My Rationale: I traded up because I really wanted this guy and the WR that Nick drafted (Tony Grabulis) but I hadn't interviewed him yet and I wasn't willing to risk it. I could have held the draft up and waited for the interview to come back, but I figured that would be a dick move after bitching about the pace. So I went with what I considered our biggest need and took my #1 DB on the board with the idea of moving him to CB as his run defense was shitty.
and was worried that he would not be there if tried
Other players, I considered with this pick: WR Tony Grabulis, as I never met a potential stud WR that I don't like.
1.12 Howie Meier - LT (23% Dev) (32% Dev) (32% Dev)
Pre TC: 30/75
Post TC: 33/73 - Meier dropped two points, but he still looks the part of a longterm starter for us. Man, I regret not drafting Grabulis here.
Post EX2: 33/74 (0/+1) - Meier bumped up a point and will start for us from day one as the replacement for Corwin. After seeing Grabulis I'm just sick.
My Rationale: Landing a top notch tackle was a huge priority for me coming into the draft. Mt. Corwin was getting up there and more importantly, he was in the final year of his contract and he was going to be expensive to keep.
Other players, I considered with this pick: See my explanation about Grabulis above. I seriously considered him here, but at the last minute, I knew I needed to stick to my plan and play it safe. I gotta admit that seeing Nick take him when I woke up the next morning was a big kick in the nuts. Seeing him come out looking like a star was an even bigger kick.
1.22 Caiden Salmon - WR (47% Dev) (57% Dev) (58% Dev)
Pre TC: 41/56
Post TC: 44/56 - Salmon is exactly the type of WR that I think will be productive for us. I'd have liked him to have a higher RR, but he's solid.
Post EX2: 45/59 (+3/+3) - Nice to see Salmon bump up, even if it's just a few points. This kinda eases the blow on missing out on Grabulis, but not much.
My Rationale: Okay, here is the deal. I started to really dig into WRs when I interviewed Grabulis. That is when I stumbled onto Graham and was going to try to trade up to draft him. Sadly, my man Nick took what I think is the S.O.T.D. just two picks ahead of me. However, I liked Salmon after his interview. He kinda reminded me of a poor man's Jaleen Browlnee and I think he can be a perfect #3 or #4 WR lining up with Benzer and Dunn.
Other players, I considered with this pick: CB Zane Cliett, DT Kendrick Rheams, WR Riddick Rendon, WR Ron Lerma
2.3 Kendrick Rheams - DT (45% Dev) (56% Dev) (58% Dev)
Pre TC: 44/67
Post TC: 51/68 - This may be the pick I'm most excited about!
Post EX2: 54/73 (+3/+5) - This was my favorite pick of the draft and could have easily been taken at 1.12 instead of Meier. I think he's gonna continue to creep.
My Rationale: Rheams was a guy that I seriously considered at 1.22 as he came up underrated and looked like a perfect replacement for DT Randall Springer who was going to be a UFA and tough to sign. When the Ravens took Stan Norton at 1.32 I was nervous that I wouldn't get one of the top DTs so I moved up.
Other players, I considered with this pick: None, I traded up to take this guy.
2.15 Rex Schulte - DE (38% Dev) (51% Dev) (52% Dev)
Pre TC: 37/61
Post TC: 42/61 - I'm liking what I see here. All of a sudden I have some depth on the DL
Post EX2: 43/64 (+2/+3) - Another player that I'm happy with. It was great to see him move in a positive direction as I thought he could drop. not the smartest player, but he's gonna be an impact guy with a potential of 100 PRT.
My Rationale: I traded Randall Springer to take Shulte as adding a DE was a priority for us. I really wanted the guy that the Broncos took (Leon Nichols) and I thought about LB Edward Ross because our LB corps was an area that I knew I wanted to beef up.
Other players, I considered with this pick: LB Edward Ross, DE Karl Heuvicq, DT Philip Garrett , WR Colin Cash
5.22 Percy Spriggs - RB (68% DEV) (80% Dev) (81% Dev)
Pre TC: 42/46
Post TC: 43/46 - I love that high HR (69/74) - He is the prototypical RB I look for.
Post EX2: 44/48 (+2/+2) - A great value pick at 5.22 and depth RB for us. His HR cam out at 72 which is very good as our #3 RB.
My Rationale: I needed an RB to replace Foster who was dealt to the Jets in the trade for LB O'Neil. Spriggs fit the bill as a RB with a decent HR bar. At 5.22 you can do a hell of a lot worse.
Other players, I considered with this pick: OG Victor Tripp, S Tristan Stanton, S James Tatum, RB Ian Truc
5.29 S Tristan Stanton - S (47% Dev) (61% Dev) (61% Dev)
Pre TC: 26/43
Post TC: 32/45 - Nothing special, but I'll take it for a late 5th round pick.
Post EX2: 33/50 (0/+5) - I was not expecting a bump from him. but I'll take it for sure. This guy will add depth to our secondary on a cheap contract. Can't complain about this one at all.
My Rationale: I took a flier on Stanton as a potential one trick pony. His RD and ST combo looked solid to me and his high Int (43) made me select him over James Tatum who interestingly enough went to the Bengals on the very next pick.
Other players, I considered with this pick: OG Victor Tripp, S James Tatum, RB Ian Truc
6.8 Victor Tripp - OG (20% Dev) (32% Dev) (33% Dev)
Pre TC: 22/56- G -
Post TC: 27/58 after a move to C - Tripp looks like he's gonna be a contributor for us, but his END may be a concern.
Post EX2: 30/65 (+3/+7) - Tripp was an excellent pick and arguably the best late round pick I've ever had in the RZB.
My Rationale: I was high on Tripp and considered him in the 3rd prior to trading my pick. However, I was pretty deep on OL so I dealt the pick. When I showed the screenshot to Joel he looked better for me that he saw and that was a good sign since my scout is better. When he was still there at 6.8 I had to roll the dice on the non-combine guy.
Other players, I considered with this pick: None
7.4 Ian Truc - RB (57% Dev) (67% Dev) (68% Dev)
Pre TC: 40/45
Post TC: 42/48 - a great sign that he's gonna be more than a ST producer for us. That high HR (65/73), END (63/70) and ST (68/72) is great!
Post EX2: 43/49 (+1/+1) - Mack Truc looks like a steal at 7.4. His HR is (68/76) which is a great sign. End (68/76) and ST (69/74) - Dude has the potential to become one of my favorite players.
My Rationale: I was thinking about Truc when I took Spriggs in the 5th round. In fact, after the Spriggs pick, I had immense regret as I thought the ST bar for Truc (plus the nickname) was a bigger bonus. When he was still there in the 7th there was no way I was passing on him.
Other players, I considered with this pick: None
Pre EX2: Overall, I think this may be one of the best drafts I've had in a long time even though I deeply regret not drafting Grabulis and by the looks of it will for a long time. I really love the Rheams and Schulte picks. While this was a hell of a lot of work to put this together, I am glad I did and wish I would have done this before. What a benefit of cutting some leagues. I'm down to 3 and could be down to 2 soon.
Post EX2: On the surface, this looks like a strong draft. However, when I think about the players I could have/should have taken I get a little sick to my stomach. The draft was loaded with OL and I should have planned better. Seeing those two stud WRs on the Seahawks and knowing that I could have had BOTH of them instead of those OL will hurt for a long, long time. If I had to give myself a grade I would say B-. Note to self: take the WRs stupid!
1.9 Jackson Poston - RG (19% Dev) (30% Dev) (31% Dev)
