‘The Rivalry’
RZB Bowl 2 (2016)
When the Pittsburgh Steelers faced up against the Seattle Seahawks in Austin Texas little did the fan base of the two franchises and the watching millions at home realise that the two powerful sides on display would become such prominent teams and obsessive rivals. The Seahawks had faced a narrow defeat in the inaugural RZB game the year before whilst the Steelers had gone 14-2 on the back of several imperious performances by wide receiver Markus Wheaton.
It was Wheaton himself who opened the scoring, catching a 24-yard bullet from Big Ben Roethlisberger. Going into half time (The halt time show included a unique collaboration from Elton John and the Beastie Boys) the Seahawk faithful must of thought that history was repeating itself as the Steelers led by 16 points. A Wilson pass to Devin Street had for a brief time brought the team level. However, the trusty boot of Pittsburgh’s Chris Boswell successfully kicked three field goals (32, 45 & 58 respectively) to extend the lead.
Going into the last 6 minutes of the fourth quarter, the only change in the score was a pair of shared field goals, one from each team.
Russell Wilson had faced a bitter defeat before and when he placed the ball in future RZB great Thomas Rawls for a one-yard touchdown the 13th man of the Seahawks for the first time that afternoon believed that they could win the game.
In a play rerun a thousand times Rawls somersaulted into the end zone over a pack of Steeler defenders and would put the Seahawks ahead for the first time in the game. It was a lead that they would not give up and a Mason Crosby Seahawks kicker scored a 23 yard field goal with just a staggering 4 seconds left on the game clock securing the brilliant comeback and Seattle’s first bowl win.
Delirious scenes followed, and Ben Roethlisberger was voted in game MVP – now it’s our chance to vote:
