Hey Mr Sawblade, some questions for you
Hey Larry. Nice to hear from you again. Really. It's good to hear from you. Seriously. Stop laughing.
A 6-10 finish which makes it four years running your record has got worse each year and my good buddy Nick’s not even in the Division anymore. What's going wrong in LA?
Last season was a bit of an off year. We had a new OC with a scheme we don't like very much and the guys didn't match up to it. Our defense was inconsistent. Very good against the pass, but couldn't stop the run. There's a lot to fix.
Looking at your key players and starting with QB Mauricia he had a big down year compared to last year finishing the season with just a 79.3 QBR, why was that and is still guaranteed the starting job this year?
Glenn is the starter for now. As I mentioned, our OC's scheme did not fit Glenn's play style. I'm going to try and fix that his year.
HB RJ Griffin was named in the “Player of Decade” team recently but his performance fell massively last year to below 4ypc, he’s had an awesome career but now is taking up over $25m in cap room is it time the Rams cut him or for sentimental purposes will you keep him on the roster?
For sentimental reasons, I'd like to keep him to finish his career here in LA. The smarter move would probably be to let him go for financial reasons. Last season I tried to feed rookie J.B. Turner the ball too much and didn't let Griffin do his thing. More poor game planning on my part last season. I'll be evaluating things closer once we get our staff together and see what we've got here.
You have 2 decent to good WRs on the roster in Eric Harvey and Alfred Carlson but they did not have great seasons and most would say they are not elite. With a poor passing game and dreadful rushing game last year what is the plan to get the offense going for this year?
As mentioned earlier, our offensive scheme was terrible. I couldn't get that going, so we are going to fix that in the next staff draft. I think all the issues with the offense trickled down from that bad scheme. So everyone suffered.
The one good thing about having a 6-10 season is you have 1.8 in the draft. 1.8 normally means you miss out on the skill players and end up with a great defensive player or offensive Lineman if you pick well, no offense (no pun intended) that’s highly unlikely to close the gap on the likes of the Seahawks and 49’ers, so how do you close the gap with them?
Yes, we have 1.8, but then have no 2nd or 3rd. So we can't really grab some potential top talent in the early rounds. It would seem a top run stopping front seven guy would be our main target. Then again, it depends on what the class looks like and it may be a BPA pick.
Even though you were 6-10 and don’t have great skill players at the present time you are over the cap. I have no doubt you are going to sort that out but chances are you are going to have limited money to spend in FA. So considering everything, is it time to rip the house down and start over?
I've tried ripping the house down in the past and to be honest...I hate trading. Trying to determine values on players and getting compensation is such a pain in the ass to me. I believe there is enough talent on the team to win. I just need to be better at game planning the offense. My teams have never really had top skilled players. Very rarely has there been a true "stud", especially on offense, on this team. So not having one is nothing new to me.
Considering where the Rams are right now and your good buddy Nick is on the waiting list for a team, would you consider asking him to be your co GM?
HAHAHAHAAA!!!! No. Besides, I'm not sure Nick would want to take that job and risk me knowing his secrets.
One final question for you if I may, can you tell me how many wins you expect next year and the order you see the NFC West teams finishing in?
Considering the changes that may be coming and the lack of draft picks, I think 8-8 would be realistic. Of course I'll do all I can to win more than that and get back to the playoffs.
Good luck with the new season. Thanks Larry.
