Just catching up with all of this - comes as a real surprise.
Jim's given me thousands of dollars worth of value for something like $50 back from me lifetime. I'm grateful to him for that and looking for a reason to make it good, so I'll be buying the new game once it's available.
Fully agree that making this game subscription-based with MP sounds like the best way to run the game as a business. Better still give the option to take as much of the game's computational load away from the user's CPU as plausible and put it server-side such that some parts of the game could be played on a mobile app.
Still cannot fathom why it is that Football Manager is 1000x FOF as a business proposition. No obvious reason to me why that should be the case. Fantasy Football is roughly similarly popular in each of the two markets and yet the text sim demand/supply is completely different. I have never understood it. If someone took FOF and bolted on better UI, some sort of in-game graphics and the ability to have college and NFL levels in the same sim so players, coaches and GMs came through from college levels up to the pros, that would be a game I'd expect would find plenty of demand. Perhaps NFL/NCAA licensing just makes that impossible but that seems lose-lose to me.
Anyway, these days I mainly play the game for the community rather than the game IYSWIM and it sounds like I'm not alone in that.

172 is the all-time peak concurrent players on steam - I think that's what it says anyway

Tbf, you are comparing FoF to the greatest sports management game And to be fair, I think the reason why FM has more of a following is the culture football has, and the people that want to be a part of that. I enjoy the American sports, but there’s nothing quite like finding a 15 year old from Costa Rica and watching them winning 10 straight balon d’ors. FoF just doesn’t have that immersion, and I can’t see it getting that

Has it been released, i'm not seeing a price or anything on steam?
no, the full joke from albi is on ihof
Ben 1 week in: "Wow. This is providing a new challenge. SP might be enough for me after all."
Ben 3 weeks in: "Well, I just got my fullback 3,000 yards from scrimmage this season. I guess I'll stay in FOF8 MP after all."
Yeah...I just noticed that Note to self...make sure you are FULLY AWAKE before making any posts LOL

You could eg start off as a weaker college team, improve performance + recruiting so eventually some of your guys are NFL level, then transfer into the NFL and trade for / draft your guys and then go from there. That would be vaguely similar and pretty cool I reckon. Would add more of a ‘storytelling’ angle vs what FOF has now. And if MP had college as well as NFL in one sim also that would make drafting much more immersive and cooler - ie some colleges would earn a reputation for producing good solid system guys that are worth drafting, etc

If you dig int the data it looks like he sold about 10,000 licences I would think that is because he it doesn't have a convenient way to play MP. It's far too easy to dominate SP, and most people won't go through the hassle of trying to play MP in its current form. Sales would be much higher if he was able to really tap into the true MP market.

yeah, the american football fan base is somewhat smaller than soccer. FM taps into the international market with more appeal.
i think a closer comparison would be OOTP baseball -- around 1300 daily users vs 80ish for fof, so around a factor of 50.

... and FM is set to include woman's soccer, which is yet another untapped market.
my impression is that the american football management sim is hampered by the exclusive rights acquired by EA. they have a cash cow with madden and no interest to move away from that format.
