Looking at the stats, it seems that throwing long is the best way to pass. While your completion percentage is low (around 1 out of 3 attempts are successful), your yards per attempt is higher than any other pass play. Of course, you'll get more interceptions and more sacks, but you'll also get more points. If the idea is to score more points, and that's why passing is more important than running, then shouldn't you just throw deep all the time?
So, with this in mind, I did some testing. I got an all star QB with good timing and sense rush, and low scramble. I got pass blockers on the offensive line, and a bunch of TEs and WRs with low GD and high RR and BP. I have a shit defense. I rexed the depth charts and defense, got a Smashmouth OC (only 59 plays though... but oh, well), and rexed a basic run/long pass playbook. I've only run 10 seasons. I have a set offensive gameplan where I run 50% and long pass 50% on 1st and 2nd downs, and play a normal game on 3rd and in the red zone, etc. About 70% of my long pass plays (7,8,9,D) are play action. Over the first 10 seasons, I've averaged 31.5 points per game, while giving up 23.4 PPG.
Here are all my averages per season over 10 seasons (I round down to whole numbers on most stats). Again, short are exclusively 3rd down and medium are exclusively 3rd and long and red zone passing attempts. I have none in the gameplan on 1st and 2nd downs.
476 rushes, 1856 yards, 3.9 yards per rush.
476 attempts, 239 completions, 50.2 completion %, 3903 yards, 33 TD, 18 INT.
Short passing: 140 attempts, 100 completions, 71.4 completion %, 873 yards, 6.24 yards per attempt.
Medium passing: 108 attempts, 66 completions, 61.1 completion %, 904 yards, 8.37 yards per attempt.
Long passing: 227 attempts, 73 completions, 32.2 completion %, 2126 yards, 9.37 yards per attempt.
Defensively, I averaged around 24th in points allowed (23.4 per game), and 31st in yards allowed (389.6 per game)
Average season: 11-5
So, although this is against LITERALLY everything that means something to me in football (I love running the ball and defense), it seems to work pretty well, with the right players. Giving up so many points just rubs me the wrong way
I'll probably change the playbook to 100% long passes, but unfortunately many of the computer generated plays have long passes as the main pass but short passes in the pattern as well... and I'm too lazy to put together a full playbook with only long passes in every play.
I am interested in opinions on this.
