Ok, so I often get asked how I manage the cap so well so I figured I'd share a few of my tricks to work around the cap. I had absolutely ZERO fears about handing Davidson that $315,000,000 with $145,000,000 in bonus because I knew I can/will manage it. I'm not saying these are foolproof or a magic bullet, but I promise you that this will get you on your way to working it out.
1. Do NOT live in your fears!
2. NEVER and I mean NEVER leave a shitload of cap space. That literally makes me sick when I see teams with $100,000,000 in cap heading into the season. Come on man, you can't take it with you. SPEND IT!
3. Craft a plan and stick to it. "A goal without a plan is just a wish" How are you going to build your team? What offense/defense do you want? Do you care about chemistry or intelligence.
4. Don't be afraid to cap out! - the cap out works brilliantly, but there are a few do's and don'ts. a. Do NOT cap out players that you could possibly trade. This is the first big mistake GMs make and yes, I make this mistake as well because things change. b. DO cap out players that you're planning to hold onto. If you could go back and look at Dunn, Benzer and Owen you will see it happened nearly every year. Now, I did not just use the in game capout, but I would work my own out by continually making offers until they signed. PATIENCE IS KEY! Each FA I take screenshots of negotiations so I make each and every round count. Sometimes it takes the UFA, LFA and even the entire preseason to work the numbers close to what you want.
5. Spread the hits out with heavy bonus. Once again, this is only for players you intend to keep. Dead cap sucks and this can be a slippery slope so proceed with caution.
6. Do NOT worry about the future. Worry about today, tomorrow will brings its own challenges. I find that far too many GMs worry about the future and stay spinning their wheels in the mud. The best teams are able to focus on today with an eye on tomorrow, but today is what really counts.
7. Play around with it. Each player/agent is different. The numbers are always changing so once again it will take Patience on your part (at least at first).
So there you have it. I know a ton of this shit is common sense, but truth is a lot of you guys aren't using it because if you were you would have been in on Davidson.

I follow most of these myself, I'm just not as disciplined as you or maybe others from season to season.

There is on little keynote that is missing here. You get players traded, that other GM's can't offload because you are probably a great salesman.
So there are players we don't want to lose for free, but are also demanding a certain contract. Even with the best cap management, you have to trade a really good player with massive demands, for you that's more often than not pretty easy. Me on the other hand doesn't even get any offers (most of the time)

I am supposed to be the guy you shouldn't trade with, yet I wouldn't dream of such an openly cheeky act.
