Where art thou, Antonio?
Two weeks into the season, and two losses later, the question on everyone's mind is.... Where is Antonio Gates? Stat line for the season? 1 catch on 5 targets for 11 yards. Philip Rivers favorite target for years and years is suddenly nowhere to be seen! How can that be? Coach McCoy assures us that the stalwart TE is firmly entrenched in their game plan, but so far that hasn't translated into targets or catches. Conversely, WR Keenan Allen has been targeted 25 times in that same span. Of course, that hasn't translated into many catches either. A mere 8 catches on those 25 targets, so the question may not be "Where's Antonio", but "Where's Philip"?
We're sold the bill of goods year after year that this is one of the premier QB's in this league, yet he's never taken us to the big dance, and after 2 games this year he's completing a paltry 42.6% of his passes while sporting a QB Rating of 48.9. That massive 5 year contract is suddenly looking like an anchor around the neck of a sinking franchise. There is no disputing that Mr. Rivers has the skills, and with Gates and Allen, and now rookie RB Melvin Gordon proving to be a talented receiver out of the backfield, there's legitimate concern as to why he isn't getting the job done. Whatever the reason, he'll need to figure it out in a hurry, as next week the team travels to Minnesota to face a Vikings squad that just crushed the team that shut out the Valiant Steeds in week one. Not holding our breath here.
Melvin Gordon - Living up to the hype
There was much ado when Melvin Gordon was taken with the 15th pick of the draft this past spring. To date, the hype has been warranted. A rocky start in week one looked like a case of the rookie jitters after Gordon went off for 113 rushing yards in week 2. Gordon appears to be the complete package of speed, power and endurance. Throw in some nifty receiving skills, and there's every reason to believe that San Diego will soon be Melville. #28 Jersey sales are already starting to spike locally, and we expect that trend to continue as this exciting rookie tries to chase down an OROY. That might be a tall task, given the state of this offensive line, but a blogger can dream!
