Hello FOF heads. So we are having once again some issues with completion % on short passes. Right off the bat I suspect that it could be the types of routes in the gameplan. I tend to avoid the super short routes in favor of slants and short outs. I also limit the screens. Maybe this has been a big mistake on my part. What say you? If I vary the types of short passes should this help the completion % go up?

I don't have better advice than to suggest looking at what Rob is doing on short passes as his team is clearly the best at them this year

Variety is the spice of all FOF life. If you built a game plan that was balanced all the way down, like equal numbers of each route and secondary route, none of them repeating the same target, made sure to swap evenly between all the formations, mixed the right amount of play action and misdirection in, and didn't favor any one run direction over another.. You could probably put on a pretty good offense. It almost never pays to leave a specific thing out of your playbook.
It helps to use very sparing plays that might seem out of the ordinary for your offense, because it defies the expectations of the game and can result in good to great success with judicious use. There's a reverse play I have been using about once a game this season in one league. We buried it a few spots down in one of the 3rd and medium (think it was 3rd and 7 section) so we don't always get to it, but we used it 9 times this season and it went for 13 yards a pop, 5 carries over 10 yards. Converted 5 of the 8 times we ran it on 3rd down (We had it in on 1st down for a couple weeks). I think the situation, the player used (a special teams ace WR with no real WR skills except big play receiving) and the rareness of when we actually used it contributed to its success. I've tried it with a RB lined up in the spot in this league, but since he also has other carries to his name I would have to dig through the logs to see how successful it has been here. I think it has been less so, but still decent. Perhaps because I use one of my main backs to run it and not a WR.
But the point of all that is to say that those 5 of 8 3rd down conversions we got off that play made it one of the more valuable plays in our book despite it not being a strength of our team or even a really viable strategic option most of the time. If you have just 4 or 5 of those types of plays in there it can turn the tide in a tight contest.
So yeah, definitely add that stuff in there. Strive for balance within the confines of your talent pool, try to center it all around your greatest strength but remember.. The bullseye on a dart board is tiny and you can only cram so much into that sweet spot before you're not able to score any more without aiming elsewhere.
