1.22 WR Alan Huffman, New Mexico, 56% developed, 5'11" 193 lbs. 24 yrs. old
LFA: 35/55
PTC: 38/55 (+3/0)
PS2: 37/51 (-1/-4)
Interview: AS
The surprise retirement of our #2 WR Charlie Urbanus sped up our plans. We couldn't get a deal done to move up for a top WR, but we were able to stay put and land a solid #2 WR in Huffman. An elite route runner with the ability to turn any play into a TD.
Holding steady through training camp. Still looks like a solid #2 WR.
A little underwhelming, but Huffman is still very useful with crisp route running. Could be more of a danger in the slot than on the outside for us.
2.22 G Cornell Newman, Ole Miss, 49% developed, 6'2" 300 lbs. 24 yrs. old
LFA: 27/58
PTC: 33/57 (+6/-1)
PS2: 32/55 (-1/-2)
Interview: H2R
We don't have a long term plan for C at the moment, and this draft was weak at C. We decided to go with a G and start looking at moving someone over to C. We thought Newman was a potential 1st round talent, so we were excited to see him fall to us at 2.22.
Good blocking bars, reasonable intelligence, and Newman is the life of the party. Quality OL for the future.
Nothing flashy here. Just a solid depth OL with the potential to start in the future.
3.22 WR Donnie Csonka, Kansas St., 31% developed, 6'2" 205 lbs. 22 yrs. old
LFA: 30/55
PTC: 34/55 (+4/0)
PS2: 35/56 (+1/+1)
Interview: AS
Good WRs are always a premium in this league. Csonka should make a great #3 WR as an explosive big body target to run in the slot.
Holding steady. Still looking like a high-quality 3rd round WR.
A bit of a steal for a WR this late in the draft. Csonka is a burner on the outside with good size to make tough plays.
3.23 T Chuck Hastings, Florida, 27% developed, 6'3" 302 lbs. 21 yrs. old
LFA: 17/55
PTC: 23/53 (+6/-2)
PS2: 23/58 (0/+5)
Interview: AS
Our long time LT Kerry Crane is on the decline and we need to be prepared to move on. Hastings is a smart capable pass blocker who could step into Crane's shoes protecting the blind side if given a couple years to develop.
A very intelligent pass blocker. What more do you need in a LT?
A nice little bump makes Hastings the almost certain heir apparent at our LT.
3.30 DE Horace Southerland, Kentucky, 57% developed, 6'2" 280 lbs. 22 yrs. old
LFA: 27/47
PTC: 32/47 (+5/0)
PS2: 32/47 (0/0)
More pass rushers are always valuable. Southerland has great ability to get around blockers, and he loves to through his whole body weight into opposing QBs.
Endurance is a little low for my taste, but Southerland could still find a valuable role in the rotation.
Southerland is about as expected as it gets. A good backup DE with some big play ability.
4.22 ILB/DE Doug Duran, Georgia, 27% developed, 6'4" 266 lbs. 21 yrs. old
LFA: 18/52 (at DE)
PTC: 22/51 (+4/-1)
PS2: 22/51 (0/0)
Duran is a very interesting prospect. A massive ILB who ran a 4.66 at the combine. We'll see if he can make the change to edge rusher.
The move to DE adds a lot of value to Duran. Good size, intelligence, and pass rushing ability to attack off the edge.
Duran is a premium backup DE. Could become a starter eventually.
4.23 ILB Bryson Riley, South Carolina, 54% developed, 5'9" 233 lbs. 24 yrs. old
LFA: 22/47
PTC: 25/44 (+3/-3)
PS2: 24/39 (-1/-5)
Where Duran is a massive ILB, Riley is a pint-sized ILB. Riley is a high motor player who can do a little bit of everything on the field. Either his skills will make him a solid LB or his size will limit his effectiveness on the field.
Trending in the wrong direction. I thought Riley was a bit of a risk in the draft. either his big bars would hold up or he'd crash into nothing. Still a chance he could pop.
Really an all or nothing pick. Riley looked like he could be special with a little luck, but now he looks like a sure backup who might not last his rookie contract.
5.22 ILB Gus McKenzie, Washington, 50% developed, 6'1" 243 lbs. 23 yrs. old
LFA: 18/38
PTC: 21/36 (+3/0)
PS2: 20/33 (-1/-3)
McKenzie is a BNR specialist who has the ability to do a little bit of everything on the field.
Great BNR ability and could factor in on special teams. I'm not sure if that will be enough to keep McKenzie on the roster.
I tend to make 1 bad pick every draft and this looks like it. McKenzie is a likely trade/cut.
6.22 CB Edwin Jacob, Purdue, 43% developed, 5'11" 201 lbs. 23 yrs. old
LFA: 19/46
PTC: 23/46 (+4/0)
PS2: 23/44 (0/-2)
Jacob is a solid M2M and BNR corner who can fit into any rotation. Should be a good depth piece in our secondary.
Decent coverage bars for a depth CB, but no endurance will make Jacob's impact limited.
Jacob will be a good backup for our nickel and dime packages.
7.18 CB/S Jason Behne, Colorado, 60% developed, 5'10" 183 lbs. 24 yrs. old
LFA: 28/49
PTC: 32/49 (+4/0)
PS2: 38/56 (+6/+7)
Behne is a CB who's better built for SS. A zone coverage specialist with some run support ability.
Near max zone ability could make Behne a very useful FS.
Great find in the 7th. Behne should be a future starter at either safety spot.
7.22 P Glenn Theisen, Duke, 73% developed, 6'5" 223 lbs. 25 yrs. old
LFA: 42/58
PTC: 44/57 (+2/-1)
PS2: 41/49 (-3/-8)
Theisen was a LB in high school before becoming a punting specialist in college. He has a big leg and can occasionally pin opponents into corners. Could be our starting P for the next 4 years.
Bars holding pretty well. We brought in a little competition in FA for preseason. Theisen should probably win the starting role though.
Theisen is a decent looking P, but I picked up a better veteran in FA, so Theisen will probably be cut.
LFA: 35/55
PTC: 38/55 (+3/0)
PS2: 37/51 (-1/-4)
