I have felt like the takeaway was more like: in a sea of randomness and un-trustworthy rookie bars, when you see the two bars from one of these noted pairings that are identical, especially when they stand out from the rest of the array... take them more seriously than you otherwise would.
Edited to add: I am not often accused of being a drafting sharp, so take that for what it's worth, potentially very little
Did anyone else read this in the voice of the guy that does movie trailers? Just me? K

I thought masked pairs died when the new version of FOF came out. They're not there like they used to be anymore, they're not the tell they once were.
They were Short/Accuracy, Medium/Timing, Long/Sense Rush, Getting Downfield/Endurance or RR/ST for WR, etc..
What does hold over still are static bars. Bars that are absolutely certain to be in that blue or orange range that your scout says they are.
Note that the linked thread from FOFC is from over a decade ago.

Was thinking about this, and I am glad masked pairs are no longer a thing because it was to the point where even I could tell who was gonna boom before the draft with magnitudes more accuracy than I can now. It was on a level with MalcPow. Everyone with any experience was that good at drafting or close to it - The game then was jockeying with people to try and figure out how late you could draft that sure fire star with the great combines and the extremely low bars except for that masked pair. I could make a pre draft list of 20 targets and at least half of them would boom 20 plus points over their first few seasons. This was back when FOF had "creepers" who would go up several points every season for their first four or five seasons, so you could draft a 30 OVR who you knew would boom and by year 4 or 5 he would be in the mid 50's, etc. Boomers would also play well above their visible bars even when they still showed as something like 27/38 on your roster, because in reality they were 27/55 or so.
You needed a change tracking utility back then to make sure you didn't accidentally trade away your creepers.. And to take advantage of noobs who were unknowingly trading theirs away.

...back in the day I used to keep a master Excel page for each roster, and one value for each player was the "cut test" to show how his ratings moved if he were released from our roster... that was a handy tell on what direction he was actually leaning under the hood.

Does the cut test still work? I haven't tried in a long while
