1.1 - Buffalo Bills - QB Shawn Hamer, Virginia
The Pros: Hamer's arm strength is off the charts, and he's a great decision maker who takes care of the ball. He also has a knack for converting third downs. His combine performance was very strong in terms of Bench and SOL test, but his position drill and agility time were impressive as well.
The Cons: He's just 5'10", runs like a fat kid and has accuracy issues at times. His pocket awareness is just OK.
The Gist: Barring volatility, I think the worst case scenario here is that Hamer will be a solid QB. Certainly the combine numbers suggest a higher ceiling, and I think it's possible that he will be a superstar level player. That makes this a solid #1 pick in my view. There were just enough flaws to get me to pass on taking him, but I could live to regret that call.
The Grade: A

LOL, I was just writing "THE NEXT DOUG FLUTIE" Flutie had the "Flutie Flakes", Hamer has the "Hamer Burger".

Obviously we were considering him at 1.2 but figured Detroit, which clearly gave up on Matt Stafford, would be taking him. He's an obvious pocket passer with limited mobility but his Sense Rush rating should make up for that and he can read the defense well enough to find target #2 or #3 when in a pinch.
Since he's gone and our interviews didn't process we've put 1.2 up for trade. Inquire within.

1.2 - St. Louis Rams - WR Demetrius Beekman, Northwestern
The Pros: Beekman pulls away from even elite defenders on deep routes. His speed is made all the more impressive when his 6'3", 208 pound frame is taken into consideration. Looks solid or better in most other phases of the game with excellent endurance.
The Cons: Very much a finesse guy despite his size. His lack of strength raises concerns about his overall game.
The Gist: There haven't been many elite receivers with strength this low, but speed kills. The big play ability is there, and that's something you can count on. I see Beekman as a slight risk with great upside. I probably would have taken him if he were still available at 1.3. Definitely one I'll keep my eye on. I'll dock the grade a touch if only because the combine checker looks ugly in terms of comparison, even if my gut says he will be great.
The Grade: A-

The Grade: A- I'll take an A-, but I think the guy will be an A+ when all is said and done. The combine checker is really useless now with CA being at 39. So much so that Ben has gotten rid of it as a "compare similar players" feature in his drafts. Even with the poor bench combines, post interview, his courage bars is still above 50. So that's not bad.

1.3 - Detroit Lions - DE Dusty Davidson, Washington State
The Pros: Davidson is an elite athlete in every sense. He uses elite lateral quickness to snuff out running plays behind the line and is equally adept at speed rushing off the edge, which is probably what the Lions like best in him. A high football IQ and great endurance are icing on the pass rushing cake.
The Cons: His bull rush is above average but not elite. He cannot play QB.
The Gist: The Lions have a long way to go, especially on offense. They went BPA here, adding Davidson as a bookend opposite Ansah. This should improve their pass rush but certainly isn't something that will turn their fortunes around over night. Still, it's a safe pick. Davidson will be a good one.

1.4 - San Diego Chargers - DT Bobby Cooley, UCLA
The Pros: Cooley fared well across the board at the combine. He looks to be solid enough in run D and pass rush tech, and there's reason to think scouts could be undervaluing his endurance in particular. Great size at 6'7".
The Cons: Not quite as physical as you'd like, which concerns me a bit. There were "workout warrior" whispers as he did get blown off the line of scrimmage by smaller players at times in college.
The Gist: There was probably a drop off after the top 3 here, which made it hard for San Diego to get a perceived win in the 1.4 slot. That said, I'm not a huge fan of the pick. I think Cooley can be a long term starter, but I think there are others on the board that may be more legit difference makers. Though I value DTs, they seem to often be available in value spots later in the 1st or beyond. And I am a little concerned that Cooley could be a workout warrior as well. Hope I'm wrong for San Diego's sake.
The Grade: C+

This analysis is great and really fun to read. Can't wait for you to tear apart my 1st round pick.

Unfortunately, I can't argue much. I was going Beekman or Bust, but didn't get an offer I liked after Beekman went off the board. I could've rolled the dice on Rivers Heir Apparent, but hadn't interviewed either of the QB's I might have taken there. Nothing I hate worse than a 1st round QB bust. I still could have (and probably should have) gone with one of the next best WR's, but wasn't completely sold after interviews. Cooley, on the other hand, came back as VU by my scouts and was the highest rated player on my board that I had interviewed. He was also a position of need.
So, hopefully a 10 year starter, even if not a sexy pick.
